Did Chandra really exist or is she an urban legend invented by collectors of dark records? Yes she did, of course she existed. In fact, that 12 year old girl with an EP of four tracks who infiltrated the New York underground scene of 1980 like a Trojan pop (as a member of the public at concerts by New York Dolls or as a teen who coincided in obscure clubs with Laurie Anderson, ESG, Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Madonna), still exists. After the sampledelic rescue of her underground hit Subways by The Avalanches in 2016, Chandra Oppenheim has uncryogenicallised her career to reclaim on stage her condition as the unacknowledged precursor of music like that of Le Tigre.
